Writer's Block: American Music Awards

None. No one musician or band can bridge all styles and genres, and all of them build upon what has come before. The best Jazz band can't do opera, the best opera singer can't do metal, the best metal band can't do kabuki music, and so on.

That's not even addressing the writer / performer split. If an ace performer performs something written by a great composer, then who gets the glory? Are we looking for a singer / songwriter / musician here?

It is even hard to pick out who is best in one subset of music. Which is the best rock band? Who sang the best blues? Who is the greatest opera singer of all time? Which of the dozen types of metal is 'best' and which band mastered that one subset of metal?

If I had to pick any one musician it would be Kevin Macleod who makes and distributes free music and who performs across a stunning range of genres. Having said that, he's not a singer. But for tackling so many types of music, and his commitment to music being free and accessible, I would choose him as the best musician of all time.
