Yes, I was expected to do something academic, preferably science.
This was because both my parents were scientists and our family has no family-buisness (or any capital to set up a business) to fall back on. So for as long as I can remember I have known I needed to go to university, study something, and sell my skills on the job market.
Since that "lack of a silver spoon in one's mouth" thing is not too unusual in this day and age, I didn't feel much about it at all really.
I did engineering with a generous side-order of science.
In summary, my answers are "yes, meh, sort-of".
