Nov. 14th, 2008 08:57 amSapphire Wyvern posted a link to a site where one can submit comments to Rudd and his ministers (or at least a team of people filtering said submissions)
Here is my letter to the PM's site:
Please shoot down the proposed internet censoring filter. Aside from the problems that will cause to every internet user in Australia (slower access, falsly blocked sites, etc) this will not meet the project brief which was to stop trafficing in child porn.
The reason this will not work is twofold. First illegal files are already sent peer-to-peer not put up on websites (where they can be easily found and lead to the paedophiles being caught). Secondly people intent on circumventing the law will be much more adept at getting around the proposed internet filter than all of the innocent Australians who do not need such underhanded skills.
To add something constructive to my criticism...I would prefer to see any child porn sites on the internet be monitored to help catch paedophiles discreetly. The proposed approach is too overt and will only make the paedophiles more careful, harder to catch. That in turn endangers the children they prey upon.
Furthermore the continual expansion of the proposal is troubling. First only child porn sites, then all illegal sites, and now all 'unwanted' or 'undesireable' sites. And without the option to opt-out that was originally offered...well you can see why the majority of people who know about these problems are becoming extremely concerned.
It is my understanding that the Australian Christian Lobby is one of the driving forces behind this project. That is worrying to me (a homosexual and an atheist) because while some Christian groups have done great things to help the wider community, others have done great harm to certain demographics based upon conflicting beliefs/lifestyles. Now that the project has expanded to "undesireable" sites I am very worried about who decides what they do and do not desire on the internet.
As I said, please stop this internet censoring project.

Please submit your own critiques of the proposed great firewall of Australia...unless I get dissapeared, in which case please don't follow in my footsteps. ^_^
