Something no-one has yet tried to exploit is the fact that the big oil suppliers in the middle east need to sell the oil as much or more than western nations need to purchase it. It would be possible to price-set...to haggle basically. Instead of capitulating to whatever price is set, the buyer can say "i'm not paying more than $x per barrel...take it or leave it." No-one has the guts apparently.
Now, that would only work if 2 or 3 of the biggest buyers cooperated to do it...almost like a buyer's union. And you would only need 3 or 4 months of reserves because I doubt the supplier nations could hold out that long.
Getting back to the topic of America policing how other people live their lives...yeah. Why bother? It's not like American troop presence is required for these countries to pump and ship oil. If anything the foreign presence destabilizes them and makes everything more difficult, not safer.
Well, people never learn I suppose. Maybe it's because aq change of approach would be admitting "wow, look how badly previous administrations screwed up...and for so long too! Boy, how embarassing eh?"
