They're definitely different protocols. I don't know about the movements of the companies behind them. I use Fire, a multi-protocol open source client for Mac OS X, otherwise I'd have no hope of keeping track of all the protocols.
Yup, i use trillian...which is a client-thingy for yahoo messenger, icq, msn, and aim. it just handles them...you need an account with each seperate service to use it.
