I am pretty sure ICQ and AOL messenger have become the same thing...

then why does AOL work and my icq died in the ass?

AIM, ICQ, MSN, Y!M, RTFM, TTFN, AGM... all the same...

They're definitely different protocols. I don't know about the movements of the companies behind them. I use Fire, a multi-protocol open source client for Mac OS X, otherwise I'd have no hope of keeping track of all the protocols.

That is strange, because my IM (I think Ristin's) client is Trillian, which treats AIM and ICQ as the same thing.

Yup, i use trillian...which is a client-thingy for yahoo messenger, icq, msn, and aim.
it just handles them...you need an account with each seperate service to use it.
