I feel like demanding my money back from the cinema and then writing angry letters to the people who produced the desecration in question, berating them for cashing-in upon a famous title to peddle their corner-cutting spin-off rubbish.

Depends on the adaptation, I suppose. I've seen plenty of book to movie adaptations that evoke the same reaction that you just stated. But I've also seen some that have been quite good, despite the deviation from the original story.
